UPDATE AND URGENT REQUEST:
We need your medical connections!! If you are connected or would be willing to connect with children’s hospitals who specialize in treating cancer in the US or elsewhere, we need you.
Oftentimes these hospitals will sponsor children who are in dire need of treatment. Mikkel and Merlyn need our help as the medical treatment they need is not available here in Kenya. It would take one call, an email and a little bit of time, but it could save these two children’s lives. Would you be willing to give it a shot for them?

Imagine a doctor tells you your child has cancer. It’s every parent’s nightmare. Now imagine there aren’t adequate facilities where you live where your child can be treated. The only option is for you to travel internationally, spending thousands of dollars that you don’t have. What would you do?
Before I had a daughter, I would hear stories of families who were battling childhood cancer and I would think about how awful and sad it was. I was moved, but now… now a days it’s different. It’s personal. I have a child of my own, and my heart can’t even begin to process the pain and shock of parents and families who have to face this reality. Realizing that there are mothers and fathers in developing countries around the world who are trying to help their babies where there is little to no treatment options is absolutely heart wrenching.
While Kenya is in the process of bringing better cancer care facilities to Nairobi, we aren’t there yet. And the situation I just described is the reality many parents are facing.
Why am I bringing this up? Because my heart is hurting today. Our family has become deeply involved in the story of two children- a 15 year old girl named Merlyn, and 2 and a half year old boy named Mikkel. My husband came across their stories a few weeks ago in a very random way, but we know it wasn’t just a coincidence… we really believe we are meant to do something to help. The types of cancer both of these children have are treatable, they just don’t have the resources to cover the costs of travel expenses and medical care. Our hearts go out to both of their families who have spent every dollar they have getting them to India, but sadly, they’ve run out of funds for these next rounds of treatment.
We’ve helped start a fundraiser we’re calling “Team M2” alongside Tin Roof Foundation , the African Cancer Foundation and KKrew Trust to try and bring awareness and to raise the money needed to provide the treatment Merlyn and Mikkel desperately need. There is no way we can raise this kind of money on our own, and just looking at the numbers can be daunting- $100,000 USD is the goal.
The situation is very serious, and time is running out.
So that’s why I’m coming to you. Some of you I’ve known for years and others I’ve never met, but I believe it breaks all of our hearts to hear stories like this. No one wants to see children suffering, especially when the cause is something that has a high chance of being successfully treated. I need your help, and I need it today. You, me, all of us can do something and help make Merlyn and Mikkel’s futures long and happy ones. Please click the link below to learn more and donate. Do it for Merlyn, for Mikkel, or on behalf of someone you love who has also struggled with the painful realities of cancer.
