Hello! I’m Whitney. Welcome to Not Your Average Tourists!
When I was 19 I had an opportunity to travel abroad. That semester in Brazil changed the trajectory of my life. Over the next 5 years, I found myself living and volunteering in 5 different countries. 4 of the 5 just so happened to be on the continent of Africa. It wasn’t just the adventure of traveling to new places that I fell in love with, it was the people I met along the way. While it might have taken me an extra year to graduate university, I can confidently say that I learned more about myself, the world we live in and the incredible people who live in it than I ever would have had I stayed in one place!
After graduation, I went on to spend just over a year volunteering in Uganda. It was during this season that I met my husband, Shawn (it’s a pretty great story). We got married in 2011 and began the great big adventure of starting our own family and a nonprofit organization, which is what keeps us busy today.
We currently find ourselves living in Nairobi, Kenya with our young daughter. Sometimes our work takes us to countries outside of Kenya, which just means more exploring, networking and adventuring for us. We are so thankful that we get to live this life, together.
I write about more than just life in East Africa here. You’ll find thoughts about parenting, recipes I’m loving, books I’m currently enjoying, and a breakdown of our latest family adventures.
I hope to give you a more accurate picture of what East Africa is really like (spoiler alert: it’s not like what most of us have seen soley on the news or in the media…). I would love it if something you find here could inspire and empower you to step outside of your comfort zone and make a BIG impact on the world you live in! As you scroll through these pages, may you find yourself more informed, inspired, and ultimately more connected. (And heck, a real bonus would be if you were motivated to come see some of these incredible places for yourself!)
